Children in Care Groups
OutLoud and Tune In are two Children in Care Council groups for children in care and young people leaving care in Stoke-on-Trent. Both groups can help you to learn new skills, build confidence and self-esteem, meet new people and make a difference. The mission of both groups is to improve the lives of children in care by letting those in charge know what it is really like to live in care/leave the care system and to give them the opinions about what is working well and what needs to be improved, changed or introduced. Both groups have great relationships with Managers and Councillors as well as with other important people and decision makers who often come along to meetings and are genuinely interested in what you have to say.
OutLoud is made up of children and young people aged 12 - 16, who live in care in the Stoke-on-Trent. It currently is open for anyone to join. The aim of OutLoud is to improve the lives of children in care, by letting those in charge know what life in care is really like. At least twice a year, the people who make decisions about children in care, including the Director of Children's Services and Elected Member, come along to meetings. They are very keen to hear what young people in care have to say. The group meets once a month at the Hanley Fire Station. Only young people that are in care will be there so there is no need to worry about other people finding out that you are part of the group if you don't want them to know. Each meeting has an agenda, listing what will be talked about.
If you live in care, you can contact the CICC about any issue that concerns your life in care. For example, this could be about your education, your social workers or where you live. OutLoud can help and support you to talk about whatever issue you want, and can put you in touch with people who can give you more information and support. If there is anything you would like to add you can contact us by e-mail at OutLoud@stoke.gov.uk.
Tune In, Care Leavers’ Group is a group of young people aged 16-25 who are preparing to leave care or already have. Tune In meets once a month to discuss issues that are important to care leavers. We always provide refreshments and spend 45 minutes chatting and relaxing at the end of each meeting.
Tune In focuses their work on;
Improving services for young people leaving care.
Creating information booklets for leaving care and accessing further and higher education.
Raising awareness of the needs of care leavers making the transition to adulthood.
Providing feedback on issues that affect them such as education, employment and training, accommodation and external support services.
Providing a support network for care leavers to share experiences and advice.
